How to Properly Prepare Yourself and Your Home for a Painting Project (Part 2)

As we have already discussed in our previous post, painting prep work is a long and daunting task. No one likes it, but it has to be done. When you start preparing your home for painting, you will soon realize how much money, time, and effort you need to invest into the process. When this happens, most homeowners start cutting corners and this leads to unsatisfactory results. If you want to get the most out of your painting project, then hire a professional interior or exterior painter.

In our blog space last week, wespoken about clearing and washing walls prior to painting. Today, we will talk about masking and priming, as these are the other things you need to do before you start painting.

Masking – Do not underestimate the importance of using high-quality masking tape. We recommend painter’s tape as it is the best we’ve tried so far. So, start masking all doors, windows, baseboards, trim, and anything else you don’t want paint on. Make sure you stick the tape as close to the wall as possible, but without touching it. This way, when you pull the tape away, you’ll have perfect lines.
Priming – If you’re planning to paint the exterior of your home, then it’s recommended you prime the surfaces. Either you do it yourself or hire an exterior painter for the job, make sure proper primer is used.

Painting exterior surfaces is more complicated than painting a roof for instance. Walls may have to be repaired before painting, or they may have to be power washed.
